Title: Radio
Post by: Friedland on November 13, 2025, 09:17:25 PM
It's no secret I like Rammstein a lot.
Not all the time but every now and then.

Keep in mind that these guys grew up in the DDR (East Germany) where most everything was forbidden.
So this song represents living history for them.
DDR ceased to exist Oct 3, 1990,

For those not versed in German the lyrics are translated to English - for your convenience.

I think this is genious .. :)

They are very famous in Norway too, my sons were at their last concert in Oslo.
It's not my kind of music, but some of their lyrics are really good.
And this one is one of the good ones!
But I have to admit, the show they are creating is stunning like hell.

Well, it can't have been easy back in Erich Honecker-land ..  :)

I would love to attend a concert but as you know I have this  emphysema condition restricting me from doing things nilly-willy.
Unfortunately some of the nuancing gets lost in translation since some of the words don't have the same semantic value in English as in German.
I'm in the situation where I understand German - but I can't make sensible use of it at any level.
I lose myself already at putting Der, Die and Das before a noun ...

I can't say anything about it, since I grew up western Germany. Funny thing is, every time I spoke with people from the eastern part, most of the time it was like: Oh, we didn't had problems ...
and I was puzzled every single time.

The song is about, that it was forbidden for the people to listen to western radio, watch TV or anything from the "free" west.
And how he enjoyed the one hour in the middle of the night, listen to the forbidden stuff.

It must have been damned hard to live in the eastern part that time, with all those restrictions, with all the waiting time for a product or even get permission to go on vacation, and always one family member had to stay.
I called it "living in the biggest jail ever".

I wish, there would be something, that would help you, so you could go on a concert. That would be fantastic!

Well. I've been "studying" DDR a bit and from what I know I would say:
They were lying !
Probably glancing over their shoulder (of old habit) to see if Stasi was lurking around .. :)
