Renderosity



Wait a moment..
Haven't we seen this before ?
Yes you have, but now there's a story here.

About a year ago I was still a member of Renderosity.
Then something happend, which I'm not going to go into detail with, but I got in conflict with the mods, ok.
The result of the ordeal ended with me logging out, never to return.

But before I logged out, I whiped my gallery clean.
No images left.
... or so I thought.

The other day I happend to come across a newsletter from Renderosity.
Among other topics they presented "Expressions in Monochrome".
And there is was.
My image !
The image I thought I had cleared out of all existence on Renderosity.



But obviously not.
Renderosity must have had it cached in some place I could not get to...

Now, there's no sense in going after Renderosity on this.
The TOS is the very same as it is on all social media platforms.
"By submitting to the galleries you grant Renderosity an exclusive blah-blah-blah" and more blah.

So, Renderosity didn't use the image for commercial purposes.
Agreed it can be argued, since the newsletter do contain ads, but at best it'a a border line issue.
It's a newsletter.

But the thing here is that Renderosity used my image without asking me or even telling me about it.
And I don't think they intend to do so at all.

Now, the "moral" in all this is to be aware and very careful with what you upload to Renderosity or any social media platform.
Preferrably, you should get a website of your own and upload your art there.
It's very easy to put in a link - like this:

There are plenty of free webspaces out there if you look around, and if you don't want to grapple with things like Word Press,
I highly recommend Weebly.
Once you get your head around how it works, it's very easy to manage.
And you even get SEO-tools with it - for free.

I've had my Weebly webspace for over 10 years and it works a charm.
So do not trust Renderosity or any other social media.
When commercial interest takes precedence, everything else is out the window.

I think it's not only unfair, it's plain not right, what they've done here.

The big pages think, they can do, what ever they want, and even if they can't, they'll do it anyway.
Cause they have the money and the lawyers, that can and will crush the little man in a sec.

You are quite right, Nena.
It is not fair nor right in any way at all - but this is how Renderosity acts.

... and there's nothing legal I can do about it at all.
All Renderosity needs to do is to point out they didn't use the image for commercial purposes and then point at the TOS.
And then its over even before it  began.

The lesson we can take from this is that no social media can be trusted not to pull a fast one and you can definitely not expect any fair treatment from Renderosity.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if that Jenny Nyström-esque image you won a competition with will turn up in a future newsletter coming up in time for winter.

So this all fuels the argument to get a website of your own.
A site that you - and nobody else - controls, where you can put up your artwork.

But of course, it still isn't safe, considering the scrapers and AI, but at least its out of reach for the social media tycoons.

There is one place where you're pictures are still there, even after deleting! In a gallery, only hidden for the public, but still there!

At least I have the control when posting a render

I just looked up Weebly and liked, that they are offering pages for free.

But I think, you won't like this part in their Terms of service

Does any provider of "free" webspace .. ?

Weebly is primarely aimed at web commerce and paying customers, so I think the chance of a solo image turning up as a promotion for Weebly is rather slim.

But they do offer free webhosting for anyone who needs it.
With SEO-tools.
It is a good alternative to Word Press, which is good, but presents a rather steep learning curve for those who don't want to dive into the cogs of a webpresentation.
It's like learning Blender and spammers and hackers seem to target WP sites heavily.
And, yes - I have had WP ... Twice.

I've actually tried quite a number of providers and so far Weebly have been excellent and very easy to use.
As long as you don't try to publish adult stuff, your good.

WP alone is too consuming, the requirements are insane.
So if one don't wanna waste a lot of money for webspace alone, only to build a page, WP is the wrong thing to use.

And yes, all having this rule in their TOS, claiming the right to use our stuff.
Well, at least I haven't found any, that don't do so.
